Dental implants are the best solution for lost teeth. Recovering from dental implants should be quick and seamless. There are some standard procedures for taking care of your dental implants so that they can heal properly.

Many people are worried about the complexity of the procedure and how well they can carry out their normal functions immediately after the placement. Below is some insight into what you can expect immediately after the procedure, and what the recovery period should be like.

Immediately After the Procedure

Implant placement is done under local anesthesia. Our dentists will, in most cases, use oral sedation. They might also use laughing gas on you during the procedure if need be. In some complex cases, the patient is put under general anesthesia. In all these instances, you will be lethargic after the procedure. It is therefore important that you do not drive or operate heavy machinery in the first 24 hours.

When the sedation and numbing wear off, you might feel some discomfort or sting for a couple of hours. It should not last very long, though. Our dentists will recommend some medication to deal with pain if it occurs. If you feel some pain that persists for more than 72 hours, you should get in touch with our dentist or come back to the clinic for a checkup.

You’ll remove the sponges in your mouth after an hour and have a bite. You should have soft foods only though. Try not to take anything hot within the first 24 hours.

The Recovery Process

Recovering from any medical procedure is always relative depending on a patient’s body and their immune system. You should not be feeling any sensation around your dental implants after the first week. The dental implants should fuse with the jawbone within the first three months.

If you have to undergo a bone graft first, it will take longer to recover. You’ll have to wait to recover from the bone graft procedure first, which might take three to six months. Dental implants are only placed after you’ve healed from the bone graft procedure.

During the recovery, you should avoid smoking. Smoking of any sort will slow the recovery process. If possible, you should stop smoking altogether. Alcohol and coffee are not appropriate during the recovery process either.

Dental implants are finished off with permanent prosthetics or dentures. It would help if you exercised proper dental hygiene. You can resume brushing your teeth and implants within the first 24 hours. Proper oral hygiene will keep the implants looking good for longer.

Our dentists walk hand in hand with their patients during the recovery duration. They seek to ensure you are completely healed and your implants are working perfectly. Call Dallas Oral Surgery Associates at 972-733-0414 today and ask any questions that you might have about dental implants.
